๐ฒ U.S. Dollar (USD/BRL)
Holding dollars means keeping part of your money in the currency the whole world uses as a reserve. It's the most direct way to remove "Brazil risk" from a slice of your wealth.
๐ What it actually is
The "dollar" as an investment simply means keeping part of your money in U.S. currency instead of Brazilian reais. The USD/BRL rate tells you how many reais one dollar costs.
Why does this matter? Because the real is an emerging-market currency โ it loses value over time, more sharply when Brazil goes through political, fiscal, or inflation crises. The dollar, being the world's reserve currency, is the "strong" side of that equation.
If you had R$ 10,000 and the real depreciated 20%, your purchasing power for imported goods (and travel) shrinks. If part of that money had been in dollars, that portion would have risen in reais by the same proportion, offsetting the loss.
โ๏ธ How the dollar moves
The exchange rate rises (dollar gets more expensive) when:
- Brazil deteriorates: fiscal risk, political instability, falling local interest rates.
- The U.S. improves: high American interest rates attract capital there.
- Global panic hits: in a global crisis, everyone runs to the dollar.
It falls (dollar gets cheaper) when the opposite happens: Brazil with ordered finances, high local rates, and global risk appetite. It's a volatile asset โ it can move 10% or 20% in just a few months.
๐ก๏ธ The risk
The risk isn't "going to zero" โ it's buying high. Whoever buys dollars at the peak of panic, with the rate at its highs, usually watches the real recover and the position shrink. The dollar is protection, not short-term speculation.
- Some ways to hold dollars (stablecoins like USDC/USDT) even pay a yield on the balance.
- Watch out for IOF tax and spread on conversions โ entering and exiting frequently eats into gains.
โ When it makes sense
When the real is relatively strong (dollar cheap) and Brazil's fiscal/political outlook is fragile. Currency diversification is portfolio insurance โ every Brazilian investor should hold some.
โ When to avoid
Buying during panic, with the dollar at its highs. The best entry is during boring times, when no one's talking about the dollar and it's cheap.
๐ How to invest in practice
International account (Wise, Nomad, Avenue), stablecoin (USDC/USDT) on an exchange, currency fund, or indirectly via BDRs and dollar-linked assets like BTLT39 and S&P 500.
