Why BBDC4 Is Falling Today on Downgrades From JPMorgan and Itaú BBA

Itaú BBA lowered its target price to R$ 20 and pointed to tougher lending conditions, while JPMorgan slashed its price target by nearly 30%.

JPMorgan downgraded Bradesco and slashed its price target for BBDC4 stock by nearly 30%, according to InfoMoney, marking the second consecutive downgrade following one from Itaú BBA. This backdrop is weighing on the shares, which are trading at R$ 14.19, down 3.34% in the latest trading session.

Why Is BBDC4 Falling Today?

Because two major financial institutions lowered their outlooks on the bank back-to-back. JPMorgan changed its recommendation on Bradesco and cut its price target—a move InfoMoney views as significant given the firm's market weight. Prior to that, Itaú BBA had already removed its buy rating. According to Money Times, Bradesco had until recently been BBA's favorite among Brazil's major banks.

The stock was already under pressure: our coverage of the debate over Bradesco's earnings shows the decline that preceded these downgrades. The sequence of the two hits:

1st downgradeItaú BBA moved the stock from buy to neutral and reduced its target from R$ 22 to R$ 20. At 4:33 PM, the stock was down 6.10% at R$ 14.77.
2nd downgradeJPMorgan downgraded Bradesco and cut its price target by nearly 30%. In the latest session, BBDC4 traded at R$ 14.19, down 3.34%.

Two consecutive cuts are not the same as one. But which of the two carries more weight?

How Much Weight Does JPMorgan's Price Target Cut Carry?

Quite a bit, and the math shows why. Itaú BBA lowered its target from R$ 22 to R$ 20, a 9.1% revision. JPMorgan's cut is roughly three times larger. A price target represents what a firm believes a stock should be worth; cutting it by nearly half the distance between "unchanged" and "half its value" indicates that the firm has reassessed the bank's earnings or risks, rather than just tweaking a comma.

What we do not know: the material we accessed does not disclose JPMorgan's new price target or its specific arguments. What is documented is the magnitude of the cut and the downgrade. Consequently, the reasons outlined below belong to Itaú BBA, not JPMorgan.

One detail prevents a misinterpretation: even after the cut, BBA's R$ 20 target sits about 41% above the R$ 14.19 trading price. A downgrade does not mean "the stock is worth less than its price." Rather, it means the target has dropped and the recommendation has cooled in succession, and that direction is what the market is pricing in.

What Does Itaú BBA Foresee for Bradesco in 2027?

A tougher environment for loan origination. In a report, BBA states that the bank will face greater difficulty navigating the period ahead, which is characterized by higher interest rates and slower economic growth. According to Money Times, Bradesco already showed signs of fatigue in the third quarter: it increased loan-loss provisions again and reduced its non-performing loan coverage. Our Q3 2026 earnings preview explains why this point was under scrutiny.

“The macroeconomic environment projected for 2027 points to weaker economic activity and lower confidence levels, which will likely restrict loan demand and/or impair borrowers' repayment capacity.”Itaú BBA, in a report on Bradesco

The report adds two risk fronts: high interest rates slow the recovery of the wholesale segment and prolong pressure on corporate borrowers, while surging household debt, combined with credit risk among small businesses, could further reduce demand and worsen repayment capacity.

What Does Santander Have to Do With This? Why Did SANB11 Also Fall?

Santander is the other side of the same coin: a weak balance sheet in the same quarter, amid the same climate. Santander Brasil's recurring net income dropped 28% in the third quarter to R$ 2.9 billion, and its ROE (return on equity) fell from 17.5% to 11.9% over a one-year period. SANB11 shares fell more than 4% following the earnings release, according to Money Times. We detail the figures in our analysis of Santander's Q3 2026 earnings.

CEO Gilson Finkelsztain admitted in a conference call that this strategic choice comes at a price: “the strategy of putting more effort and capital into lower-risk segments is costing us in the short term with declining spreads, but it is a winning strategy over the long term.” The plan is to direct more capital toward high-income clients and large corporations while strengthening the wholesale business. In small and medium-sized enterprises, growth will come from services like cash management and acquiring rather than unsecured lending.

Santander and Bradesco have different strategies, but the underlying diagnosis is similar: lending is harder to grow and margins are tight. Because banks carry heavy weight in the Ibovespa, the combination of weak earnings and negative revisions also weighs on the index, as we saw in the sell-off in bank stocks following the elections.

Is a Downgrade a Sell Order?

No. Itaú BBA moved to neutral, not sell, and maintained a target above the market price. A downgrade represents the opinion of two firms, and firms make mistakes. What it does is shift market sentiment and short-term buying and selling flows, which is reflected in today's share price. If your investment thesis is long-term, the useful question is different: will what BBA describes (high interest rates, weaker credit, defaults) materialize in the bank's numbers?

What This Means for BBDC4 Investors

Today's price reflects the shock of two consecutive revisions rather than new financial results from the bank. What has changed is the analysts' benchmark: the average target for what the stock "should be worth" is lower, and the core argument (high interest rates and weaker credit in 2027) will only be proven or disproven in upcoming earnings reports.

1

More firms following BBA and JPMorgan: if other major institutions cut their recommendations, it stops being two isolated cases and becomes a consensus; if they do not follow suit, the movement remains contained.

2

Provisions and NPL coverage in the next earnings report: BBA pointed to an increase in provisions and a drop in coverage in Q3. Further deterioration in both metrics would support its thesis.

3

Interest rates and economic activity in 2027: BBA's report assumes higher interest rates and slower growth. If the scenario changes, the thesis falls apart with it.

4

Stock price versus BBA's target: R$ 14.19 today, compared to a R$ 20 target. If the stock loses momentum without new earnings news, it is market sentiment; if it moves alongside earnings reports, it is fundamentals.
