About this indicator
The indicator tracks the price of the arroba (15 kilos of carcass) of finished cattle ready for slaughter in São Paulo — the benchmark used across Brazil.
The market is driven by the cattle cycle, a slow, multi-year movement: high prices encourage producers to retain females to raise more calves, which reduces slaughter supply in the short term and sustains prices; years later, these animals reach the market and prices drop.
This indicator is for the weaned calf — the young animal that the fattening rancher buys to finish. The ratio between the calf's price and the steer's arroba defines the margin for those who fatten cattle: when calves rise more than steers, margins tighten.
What drives prices up and down
China is the largest buyer of Brazilian beef. Sanitary embargoes or changes in Chinese demand immediately impact the arroba.
The phase of the cattle cycle — whether producers are retaining or liquidating breeding cows — determines the supply of ready animals for years.
Expensive corn drives up the cost of feedlot fattening and alters the calculation of when to send animals to slaughter.
How to get exposure to calf - sp as an investor
There is no simple way for individual investors to buy a 60-kg bag or an arroba and store it. The price on this page is for the physical market: trading there involves producers, cooperatives, trading companies, and industries.
The most direct and accessible route. Agribusiness-related companies listed on B3 have earnings sensitive to these price quotations — and you can track each one on the stocks page.
Listed funds that finance the agricultural chain, usually via CRAs and receivables. Commodity prices affect the producer's ability to pay — and therefore the fund's credit risk. Check them out under real estate funds and Fiagros.
There are live cattle, corn, soybean, and coffee contracts traded on the exchange. This is the instrument used by those who need to lock in prices (producers and industry), not a long-term investment: it requires margin requirements, has an expiration date, and involves leverage.
Commodities do not pay dividends or interest: the return comes solely from price variation. Therefore, for most investors, it makes more sense to gain exposure to agribusiness through companies and funds — which generate cash — rather than trying to time the direction of price quotations.
