About this indicator

The index tracks the price of a 60-kilogram bag of raw soybeans paid to the producer. It is the most important commodity in the Brazilian economy: on its own, it accounts for a massive share of the country's exports.

The grain is mainly turned into two products: meal, which feeds chickens, pigs, and cattle, and oil, used for cooking and biodiesel. Because of this, soybean prices run through the entire animal protein supply chain.

This is the indicator for soybeans delivered in Paranaguá (PR) — the largest grain port in the south of the country and the benchmark for exporters. It tends to be higher than the interior indicator because it already includes freight to the port; the difference between the two offers a direct reading of logistic costs.

What drives prices up and down

Chicago and the dollar

Soybeans are priced globally on the Chicago Board of Trade in dollars. The domestic price is essentially the Chicago quote converted and adjusted for freight and port premiums — which is why the exchange rate matters so much.

China

The country buys most of the soybeans that cross the globe. Any signal regarding the Chinese swine herd or tariffs moves the entire market.

Weather in the Americas

Brazil and the United States harvest at opposite times of the year. Drought in either country, or in Argentina, redraws global supply.

How to gain exposure to paranagua soybeans as an investor

There is no simple way for individual investors to buy a 60-kg bag or an arroba and store it. The price on this page is for the physical market: trading there involves producers, cooperatives, trading companies, and industries.

Stocks of companies in the sector

The most direct and accessible route. Agribusiness-related companies listed on B3 have earnings sensitive to these price quotations — and you can track each one on the stocks page.

Fiagros and agricultural FIIs

Listed funds that finance the agricultural chain, usually via CRAs and receivables. Commodity prices affect the producer's ability to pay — and therefore the fund's credit risk. Check them out under real estate funds and Fiagros.

Futures contracts on B3

There are live cattle, corn, soybean, and coffee contracts traded on the exchange. This is the instrument used by those who need to lock in prices (producers and industry), not a long-term investment: it requires margin requirements, has an expiration date, and involves leverage.

Commodities do not pay dividends or interest: the return comes solely from price variation. Therefore, for most investors, it makes more sense to gain exposure to agribusiness through companies and funds — which generate cash — rather than trying to time the direction of price quotations.

Frequently asked questions

What is the price of paranagua soybeans today?
The value at the top of this page is the latest collected quotation, with its date displayed alongside it. The reference is the CEPEA/ESALQ index, calculated from actual physical market transactions and published every business day, typically in the late afternoon.
Is the price on this page the same as what I pay at the market?
No. This is the price paid to the producer per 60-kg bag. Between the producer and store shelves, there is processing, packaging, freight, taxes, and retail margins. The indicator is the raw material of the chain — it anticipates retail movements, but on a different scale.
What is CEPEA/ESALQ?
It is the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics at ESALQ/USP. It calculates daily reference prices for Brazilian agribusiness by consulting a panel of market agents. It serves as the benchmark reference used in contracts, financing, and on the B3 itself.
Can you invest in paranagua soybeans?
Buying and storing the physical product is not feasible for average investors. Practical exposure comes from shares of sector companies, Fiagros, agricultural receivable funds, or futures contracts on B3—each option carrying different risk profiles, as explained above.
