About this indicator

The index tracks the price of the 60-kg bag of corn paid to the producer. In Brazil, the bulk of production comes from the safrinha — the second corn crop planted right after soybeans in the same area, between January and March.

Corn is used almost entirely for feed: it is the primary cost item for poultry, pork, and feedlot cattle producers. A growing portion is also turned into ethanol at plants in the Midwest region.

What drives prices up and down

Safrinha window

Delayed soybean planting pushes the safrinha outside the ideal rainfall window. This is the main climate risk for Brazilian corn.

Feed and ethanol demand

Poultry, hogs, and feedlots consume corn year-round; corn ethanol plants have structurally expanded this demand.

Chicago and exports

Like soybeans, corn has an international price. When exports are attractive, less is left for the domestic market, driving prices up.

How to get exposure to corn as an investor

There is no simple way for individual investors to buy a 60-kg bag or an arroba and store it. The price on this page is for the physical market: trading there involves producers, cooperatives, trading companies, and industries.

Stocks of companies in the sector

The most direct and accessible route. Agribusiness-related companies listed on B3 have earnings sensitive to these price quotations — and you can track each one on the stocks page.

Fiagros and agricultural FIIs

Listed funds that finance the agricultural chain, usually via CRAs and receivables. Commodity prices affect the producer's ability to pay — and therefore the fund's credit risk. Check them out under real estate funds and Fiagros.

Futures contracts on B3

There are live cattle, corn, soybean, and coffee contracts traded on the exchange. This is the instrument used by those who need to lock in prices (producers and industry), not a long-term investment: it requires margin requirements, has an expiration date, and involves leverage.

Commodities do not pay dividends or interest: the return comes solely from price variation. Therefore, for most investors, it makes more sense to gain exposure to agribusiness through companies and funds — which generate cash — rather than trying to time the direction of price quotations.

Frequently asked questions

What is the price of corn today?
The value at the top of this page is the latest collected quotation, with its date displayed alongside it. The reference is the CEPEA/ESALQ index, calculated from actual physical market transactions and published every business day, typically in the late afternoon.
Is the price on this page the same as what I pay at the market?
No. This is the price paid to the producer per 60-kg bag. Between the producer and store shelves, there is processing, packaging, freight, taxes, and retail margins. The indicator is the raw material of the chain — it anticipates retail movements, but on a different scale.
What is CEPEA/ESALQ?
It is the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics at ESALQ/USP. It calculates daily reference prices for Brazilian agribusiness by consulting a panel of market agents. It serves as the benchmark reference used in contracts, financing, and on the B3 itself.
Can you invest in corn?
Buying and storing the physical product is not feasible for average investors. Practical exposure comes from shares of sector companies, Fiagros, agricultural receivable funds, or futures contracts on B3—each option carrying different risk profiles, as explained above.
