About this indicator

The indicator tracks the price of a ton of wheat paid to the producer. It is the grain for which Brazil is most dependent on imports: the country produces about half of what it consumes.

Wheat is classified by baking quality — protein and gluten strength. Bread-quality batches are worth much more than feed-grade wheat, and rain during harvest usually downgrades this classification.

This indicator covers wheat in Rio Grande do Sul, the second-largest producer. Gaúcho wheat tends to react faster to Argentine wheat due to its proximity to the border.

What drives prices up and down

Argentina

It is Brazil's natural supplier, within Mercosur and tariff-free. Argentine harvest and export policy set the ceiling for domestic prices.

Exchange Rate

Since a large portion of consumption is imported, a strong dollar drives up wheat prices in Brazil even with a good local harvest.

Black Sea

Russia and Ukraine are the world's largest exporters. Conflict or export restrictions there reprice wheat globally.

How to get exposure to wheat - rs as an investor

There is no simple way for individual investors to buy a 60-kg bag or an arroba and store it. The price on this page is for the physical market: trading there involves producers, cooperatives, trading companies, and industries.

Stocks of companies in the sector

The most direct and accessible route. Agribusiness-related companies listed on B3 have earnings sensitive to these price quotations — and you can track each one on the stocks page.

Fiagros and agricultural FIIs

Listed funds that finance the agricultural chain, usually via CRAs and receivables. Commodity prices affect the producer's ability to pay — and therefore the fund's credit risk. Check them out under real estate funds and Fiagros.

Futures contracts on B3

There are live cattle, corn, soybean, and coffee contracts traded on the exchange. This is the instrument used by those who need to lock in prices (producers and industry), not a long-term investment: it requires margin requirements, has an expiration date, and involves leverage.

Commodities do not pay dividends or interest: the return comes solely from price variation. Therefore, for most investors, it makes more sense to gain exposure to agribusiness through companies and funds — which generate cash — rather than trying to time the direction of price quotations.

Frequently asked questions

What is the price of wheat - rs today?
The value at the top of this page is the latest collected quotation, with its date displayed alongside it. The reference is the CEPEA/ESALQ index, calculated from actual physical market transactions and published every business day, typically in the late afternoon.
Is the price on this page the same as what I pay at the market?
No. This is the price paid to the producer per metric ton. Between the producer and the shelf, there is processing, packaging, freight, taxes, and retail margin. The indicator is the raw material of the chain — it anticipates retail movement, but on a different scale.
What is CEPEA/ESALQ?
It is the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics at ESALQ/USP. It calculates daily reference prices for Brazilian agribusiness by consulting a panel of market agents. It serves as the benchmark reference used in contracts, financing, and on the B3 itself.
Can you invest in wheat - rs?
Buying and storing the physical product is not feasible for average investors. Practical exposure comes from shares of sector companies, Fiagros, agricultural receivable funds, or futures contracts on B3—each option carrying different risk profiles, as explained above.
