Pick the manager or the dividend?

Today's dividend is the result of someone's decisions. But the manager alone isn't enough either.

The instinct is right

The dividend comes from decisions

  1. Manager decidesbuys, sells, issues, renegotiates
  2. Portfoliothe fund's buildings and securities
  3. Cash generatedwhat the portfolio produces
  4. Dividendwhat reaches you

In the site's test on 7 funds (09/10/2026, small sample), management was the best early sign of later drops.

Same yield, different funds

Both pay 10% a year

Manager A

−7.84%

  • Dividend yield of 10%
  • Two issues that cut book value 4% each

Manager B

+4.04%

  • Dividend yield of 10%
  • Two issues above book value, +2% each

Effect on book value for holders who didn't subscribe. Illustrative example.

The compounding math

11.9 points of book value apart

0.961st issue×0.962nd issue=0.9216manager A: −7.84%
1.021st issue×1.022nd issue=1.0404manager B: +4.04%

The dividend yield shows none of these decisions.

Limits of the idea

A good manager doesn't fix everything

  • Bought expensivea good manager overpaying still delivers little
  • Names cost moneystar managers' funds tend to trade at a premium
  • Teams changethe brand stays, people leave
  • Same houseruns good and bad funds
  • Short track recordlong book-value history is rare

Judge with data, not fame

Eight questions about the manager

  • Book value + payouts vs. CDIover 12, 36 and 60 months
  • Promised and paid?guidance vs. actual
  • Issues below book value?
  • Related-party deals?approved by vote
  • Feesbase and level
  • Owns shares itself?
  • In the last crisishow did it react?
  • Reportsclear and consistent?

The balanced answer

Manager AND portfolio AND price

Choose by the manager and by what the fund owns today, at today's price. The dividend alone is a rear-view mirror; the manager alone is faith.

Remember this

Three takeaways

  1. The dividend is a resultIt comes from buys, sales and issues someone decided.
  2. Same yield, different book valueIssuing below or above book value splits two funds that pay the same.
  3. Judge with dataTotal return, promises kept, issues and conflicts — not the brand.

Quick quiz · 1 of 2

Which sign says MORE about the manager's quality?

See answer

The decision record. Yield is a past result and can be inflated; size doesn't show whether the manager respects holders.

Quick quiz · 2 of 2

“Big manager, safe fund.” True?

See answer

No. Judge each fund by what it owns, its price and the decision record of whoever runs it.
